The Center for Health Statistics handle, collects and tabulates health related statistical data for the state of Alabama. The Center files, stores, and issues certified copies of vital records including birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates for events that occur in Alabama. An automated vital records system called ViSION, or Vital Statistics Image Oriented Network, allows vital records to be issued through all 67 county health departments.

Filing of birth certificates began in 1908 for person born in Alabama. By law, birth certificates are confidential records with restricted access for 25 years from the date of birth.
Same with birth certificates filling began in 1908 for person who died in Alabama. Also, by Alabama law, death certificates are confidential records with restricted access for 25 years from the date of birth.
Marriage certificates was made available from 1936 to present while divorce certificates are only available from 1950 and onward. By Alabama law, marriage and divorce records are not private and can be obtained freely by the public. Certificate costs are $15 dollars and $6 dollars for each additional copy.
Alabama law directs the State Registrar to establish a new birth certificate, for persons born in Alabama, after an adoption, legitimation or paternity determination takes place. The new birth certificate is substituted for the original birth certificate in the files, and the original birth certificate and evidence of adoption, legitimation, or paternity determination are placed in a "sealed file."
